Yapple Pie Dog Cookies

Z and I have had one of the most frustrating summers ever! We’ve been battling fleas since the beginning of July. If you have dogs you know how much of a pain they are! And this was no ordinary infestation. I would find one flea on Z, bathe him, clean the entire house and then 7-10 days later find one more flea. That’s all it ever was. Never found one on the carpet, couch, or his bed. Just one or maybe two on him. It was maddening!

We have now been flea free for three weeks so I felt it was time to celebrate! We still vacuum almost daily and poor Z gets sprayed with Vet’s Best Flea + Tick Spray more often than he would like, but I’m feeling pretty confident that we’ve won the war. As a treat I made Z some Yapple Pie dog cookies.

Yapple Pie Dog Cookies

These Yapple Pie dog cookies are made with real pieces of apple and a dash of cinnamon. It actually smells like an apple pie when they’re baking! Made me want to try one myself, but I resisted.

To mix up the dough, I whisked the dry ingredients together first then added the wet ingredients. While the recipe calls for ½ cup unsweetened applesauce, I actually used just a tiny bit less than that. I purchased a six pack of applesauce cups and used one of those in this recipe.

I cut up about a quarter of a granny smith apple into tiny little chunks and added those to the dough last. You don’t want the apple pieces to be too big since you’ll need to roll the dough out and big pieces will prevent you from getting the cookies thin enough.

I rolled my dough out to about a quarter inch thickness and used my mini apple shaped cookie cutter. (I love these fall themed mini cookie cutters my mama got for me!) You may need to use a bit of force behind whatever cookie cutter you decide to use if the edge is going through a piece of apple. Which also means you may have some edges that aren’t perfect. I can’t imagine your pup will mind though. Z certainly didn’t. He loved these treats!
