Homemade Doggie Breath Busters are made with fresh parsley and mint to keep your pup’s breath smelling fresh!
Who here wishes their dog had better smelling breath? Everyone? That’s kind of what I thought. While we all love our four legged family members, occasionally the scent of their breath may leave us covering our noses. Enter Homemade Doggie Breath Busters!
These hard baked little treats contain both fresh parsley and mint, both of which can help your dog in more ways than one. You’re probably already aware of why mint can help with your dog’s stinky breath. Breath mint, anyone? But did you also know that mint can help soothe an upset stomach and aid in digestion? Not to mention, in the summer peppermint can act as a natural bug repellent for your pup! How great is that?
You may not be as familiar with the benefits of parsley, but they are just as expansive. Parsley is antimicrobial, which is how it can help with your pups stinky breath issues. As an antimicrobial it helps prevent the multiplication of bacteria and other bad breath causing germs. Awesome!
On top of being antimicrobial, parsley also has anti-inflammatory properties, is a mild diuretic, and super rich in fiber, protein, and numerous vitamins and trace minerals. You can even use it if your dog is stung by a bee to neutralize the poison.
These Homemade Doggie Breath Busters may not contain enough parsley to help your arthritic dog and the leaves need to be applied topically for a bee sting, but they sure will help with those pesky bad breath germs.
I fully intend on keeping a stash of these treats around to keep Z’s breath minty fresh, but I will also continue to brush his teeth about 3 times a week. While your dog will love these treats as much as Z does, brushing is still essential to a healthy dog lifestyle. Follow up your brushing with a Homemade Doggie Breath Buster and your dog may not be as upset about having his teeth brushed. Z certainly isn’t a fan.
*Also keep in mind that if your dogs breath is especially foul smelling, you may want to take him to a vet since that can be a sign of a more severe underlying problem.*
Homemade Doggie Breath Busters
- 1/4 Cup Fresh Parsley chopped
- 1/4 Cup Fresh Mint chopped
- 1 1/2 Cups Brown Rice Flour
- 1/4 Cup Unsweetened Applesauce
- 1/4 Cup Water
- 2 Tbs Vegetable Oil
Preheat oven to 350°. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
With a sharp knife finely chopped the parsley and mint. Place herbs, juice and all, into a mixing bowl or your stand mixer. Add flour and whisk to combine.
Add applesauce, water, and oil to flour/herb mixture and stir until fully combined and it forms a ball of dough. The dough may seem a bit crumbly at first, but keep mixing and it will combine.
On a lightly floured surface roll out the dough to about a 1/8" thickness and cut treats using a 1" bone shaped cookie cutter. Place treats on lined baking sheet and bake for about 25 minutes. They should bake into hard treats.
Since these treats are hard baked they will last about 3-4 weeks in an airtight container.
